A lawn can look cared for without taking over your calendar. The trick is to focus on the few seasonal moves that change how the whole garden reads.
1. Mow high and less often
A slightly taller lawn develops deeper roots and handles dry spells better. Keep the blade sharp, remove no more than a third of the height at once, and let the grass show a little softness.
Raise the mower height in hot weather.
Mow when the grass is dry.
Leave fine clippings where they fall.
2. Feed lightly at the right time
More fertiliser does not automatically mean a better lawn. A measured spring feed and a modest autumn treatment are usually enough when the soil, mowing and watering are already working together.
Test the soil before adding amendments.
Use slow-release feed for steadier growth.
Skip feeding during heat or drought stress.
3. Watch the edges
Crisp edges make the whole garden look maintained, even when the lawn itself is allowed to grow naturally. Spend a few minutes each month trimming the line where grass meets paving, beds and borders.
4. Keep the seasonal rhythm simple
Consistency beats intensity, especially when the garden has to fit around a real weekend. A short checklist that you actually repeat will do more than an ambitious schedule you abandon by midsummer.
